We will have heard of the Cumbria and Northumbria shootings in the news and the pressure both incidents had put on the respective forces armed support with both having to draft in armed officers and vehicles from other forces.
Now I know we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world but Mr. Bird legally owned his weapons and Mr. Moat had the “friends” to be able to get hold of a sawn-off pretty much as soon as he left prison.
Now I for one fully support the arming of the police I don’t buy in to the arguments that the police will no longer be approachable and “scary storm troopers” yes it would come at a cost both training and equipment but I wouldn’t feel I was losing my civil liberties just because the police would be better equiped to protect me and my family and the rest of the public.
But i am not sure if we should be allowed ourselves to “bear arms” now I am not suggesting for a moment that we start selling Glocks in Asda (In the states you can by a firearm in some big supermarkets) but surely we should be able to defend ourselves, PC Bloggs has said that the public wouldn’t need to be armed if the police were. Well yes but the police are not always “there” when you need them we are one of the few countries where you are not allowed to carry defensive weapons (Batons, Mace/pepper spray, tazers etc) now again I am not saying we should start handing these out at neighbourhood Watch meetings but is it not a right to be able to defend yourself fully from attack?
For the record I don’t want to be kitted out like a cross between batman and a storm trooper but I would like to be able to defend me and my family if I ever needed to I hope never have to but that’s not the point.
Again thanks for reading please feel free to comment.
